I doubt there’s an American with even the faintest interest in public events who wasn’t made aware of every one of these stories, didn’t have them repeatedly drummed into their head in the amplifying loop that connects agenda-driving traditional news organizations, culture-shaping digital sites, knowledge-delimiting search engines, and information-controlling social media platforms.

It’s not simply that the left-leaning media and their allies control most of the public discourse. They do, but that doesn’t much matter anymore. I suspect that most news now is consumed by people who choose what they believe. The larger problem is that these people, even as they tell us their ideologically approved falsehoods, are trying their level best to drive the other side out of circulation completely. Not just the falsehoods; they’d like to drive out facts and arguments they don’t approve of too. And they think they can do it.
The big buzzword on the left these days is—absolutely without irony—“misinformation.” Many big media companies now have teams of reporters to cover “misinformation” or, more conspiratorially, “disinformation.”
As far as I can tell, not one of these has yet produced a single report on any of those fabrications I briefly described at the top of this column. Surprise.
The aim is a full-bore corporate and regulatory crackdown on news and information that doesn’t help their cause. They want the memory-holing of the Hunter Biden story to be the model for all news dissemination.
Where do you turn to for accurate information? I find myself aggregating info from various sources and then applying a ‘smell’ test to it. I also tend to wait a few days to let the facts emerge - like letting a fine wine breathe. The real danger I see is that most people who get news from social media/cable news will miss any possible correction and still believe the original story/lie/omission/misinformation (especially if it fits their narrative/ideology). The propagators of these lies clearly understand this. In some cases, the delay can cause severe consequences like the burying of the Hunter Biden laptop story until after his father was elected as President - Twitter later remarked that this was wrong.
A couple new news and information channels have developed to offer alternate opinions to the traditional channels. Time to weigh what we hear and decide what to believe. (Both are available on portable devices.)
I am hoping people wake up to the truth and the misinformation news producers will go out of business.
