Here is a contrarian view - Conservatives should let sanctuary cities continue with their tactics - to not assist the Federal Government in apprehending and detaining illegal immigrants charged with minor or non-capital offenses.
Critics see sanctuary cities as locations that harbor criminals, while defenders view them as making a local-based decision not to support intrusive national enforcement efforts. Using terms such as sanctuary cities, “flouting,” or “non-cooperative” with the law implies that they are breaking it, but they are not.
The real issue lies with Federalism - the principle that America is based on that divides the power between state/local and the federal government. For more information, you can read the Federalist Papers (Barnes & Nobles has a beautiful leather-bound version). The “commandeering” doctrine also applies; the federal government cannot require local/state governments to enforce federal law.
President Trump tried to instill the federal government into the sanctuary city policies by withholding federal funds from states - he lost for good reasons - the constitution. What would have happened if Trump had won? Would the Biden administration now use the same tool against “red” states?
What other areas are you ready to hand over to the Federal Government to enforce in your cities and state? Be careful in what you ask for…
Gun control?
School Policies?
Gambling?
Marijuana?
Abortion?
Yes, the stories of violence after a local force refuse a federal detainer for an illegal immigrant are horrible. Still, good policies should not be moved by the immediate and visible - what was the effect of the thousands who did not commit a non-immigration criminal act but are unknown?
Let’s quit trying to fix the issue in “Chicago” and resolve the root issues that cause millions of immigrants to choose an illegal method to immigrate. Legislators, Legislate!

In 1986, President Reagan signed the be-all, end-all immigration reform bill legalizing 4 million people here illegally at the time after extracting solemn promises from both parties that never again would we be here, that E Verify would be enforced. It's never again...again.
Nothing will change until and unless the Feds begin perp walking for hiring without checking for a valid Social Security Number via E Verify. Neither party wants to do that; It's political suicide.

Law enforcement has an obligation to enforce all laws equitably. If that happens unjust laws are exposed. Corrective Legislative action will ensue.
We are in this mess because the executive branches of the nation own and use law enforcement to achieve their political agendas.
Our law enforcement is therefore being gerrymandered.
