Bailey, Ronald; Tupy, Marian L, Cato Institute.
His book can be found here. The book has much more data on other trends such as work, technology, farm, violence, and health. All data is sourced/referenced from legitimate third parties and looks pretty credible.
Hunger Retreats:
Undernourishment in the world fell from 37% of the population in 1971 to 10.8% in 2018.
Famines caused by drought, flood, pests, and war have killed millions.
In this century, war and political instability are primary causes of famine. Famines have disappeared outside of war zones.
Grain Cornucopia:
Grain provides 50% of the caloric consumption of humans.
Rice is the most grown, followed by Wheat.
Potatoes are the third most important food crop in the world.
1961; Farmers harvested an average of 545 lbs of grains for each person in the world.
2017; Farmers harvested an average of 838 lbs of grains for each person in the world.
This happened despite farmland only increasing from 3.5 billion acres to 3.9 billion acres.
Crop yields are expected to increase 1.4%/year, faster than the population increase.
Famines have disappeared outside of war zones.
Farming more Fish:
Annual fish consumption was 14 lbs/yr in 1950.
Annual fish consumption was 45 lbs/yr in 2016.
Annual wild-caught production has been flat for the past twenty years (90 million metric tons).
The annual aquaculture production (fish farming) is 80 million metric tons (2016).
Protein Boom:
Everyone is eating more meat and drinking milk.
1964-66; Meat consumption was 54 lbs/person/year.
2015; Meat consumption was 91 lbs/person/year.
1964-66; Dairy consumption was 163 lbs/person/year.
2015; Dairy consumption was 183 lbs/person/year.
I hope you found this interesting, the sky is not falling, and we are not running out of food…..what trends/facts surprised you here?
