I have been following the Demar Hamlin story closely - not because I want to but because I am being force-fed a diet of it by every media/social media platform I follow.
I have silently disagreed (not anymore!) with the magnitude of this story - what makes it the most crucial story in the US right now? I get that we have the full video of the guy falling backward after a routine tackle - indeed, this contributes to the drama. He is not a superstar - this is his second year as a professional football player. I am interested in what makes a story go ‘viral’.
Some of the reason may be the on-screen drama this story produced but it can’t be the only reason. There is probably only a few thousand fans who even knew this player before this unfortunate event - why are they so interested now? A sign of being educated is admitting that you don’t have all the answers and here is a case. any ideas?
He holds a Christmas toy drive for children and already people have donated $8.6M to it - additionally, whoile he was still in intensive care, he came out with a T-shirt - the proceeds of this appears to be going to the Cincinnati trauma center where he was treated. Is the trauma center missing something it needs to treat patients?
For me the it was not the magnitude of the moment but the results of the moment. What are the chances that at just the right moment a team of medical professional are there and with the equipment needed.
The crowd and the other players did not wait to see the results of their efforts, but within minutes the players, coaches, TV media and fan began praying. Perhaps not is all as it seems, there has not been ( to my knowledge) any outcry about the prayers lifted up on live media and by perhaps millions, that believed in the power of prayer.
I'm thinking it may simply be that we finally have something the whole country agrees on: A fellow human traveler was almost certainly dead, yet revived by a team of four doctors and a respiratory specialist. It's been seldom seen since Lazarus, who had God's team working his case.
The Public Prayer aspect is unique. It was actually illegal as I understand. I’m surprised we didn’t see a couple of fire engine pumpers, ladder trucks accompany the ambulance on the field. They followed an ambulance to Walmart last week
The NFL will not wait 20 minutes to get someone injured off the field in the future. Leaving the players standing around in a public pre wake set them and the fans into a dither. Plus the NFL business was in chaos by the next afternoon
30 second of silences and play ball News at 10 Central.
While I am happy that Mr Hamlin is doing better and that he was (is?) able to help lots of people, this is another example of the news media's single minded focus on a single story that seems so frequent now. One story does NOT need to take the entire time for a news program to the exclusion of everything else - except commercials. Just cover the story and get on with the rest of the news and weather.
I believe it's the media's way of drawing attention to the death of a(nother) sports figure that may have been affected or died following injection of THE VACCINE. While being paid to advertise and support the use of these unapproved pharmaceuticals, they find it hard to report any negatives associated with the produce.
